As part of its free public lecture series to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, Swinburne University of Technology hosted an event to profile the Square Kilometre Array project and launch the the SKA education website on Wednesday 9 December 2009 from 6.30pm.
The Hon Richard Marles MP, Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Innovation and Industry, introduced the speaker and conducted the launch of the SKA education website.
Speaker: Professor Richard Schilizzi is the Director of the SKA Program Development Office (SPDO), which is the organisation responsible for coordinating international efforts on the science case, engineering system design, site proposal process, operational plan, telescope performance simulation and outreach for the SKA. Professor Schilizzi travelled to Australia to discuss a range of issues relating to Australia’s bid to host the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and astronomy more broadly. The SKA will be one of the largest and most ambitious international science projects ever devised and will greatly assist us to answer fundamental questions about the evolution of the universe.
Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, conducted a demonstration of the SKA education website.
